Odds on Laura Robson winning US Open tumble

The 18-year-old became the first British female player to make the fourth round of a Grand Slam in 14 years

Sky Bet have cut Laura Robson’s US Open odds from a pre-tournament price of 1000/1 to 40/1 following another remarkable win, ousting world number nine Li Na on Friday.

The 18-year-old became the first British female player to make the fourth round of a Grand Slam in 14 years with her shock victory, having already upset the odds in ending Kim Clijsters’ singles career in the second round.

Robson, ranked 89th in the world, headed into her clash with Clijsters as the 7/1 outsider, while she was cut to 200/1 for the title following that win and a 9/2 punt to beat Na.

Sky Bet’s Ned Brooker told Tennis Betting News: “We had Robson up there with the biggest-priced players in the draw ahead of the tournament but her odds have come tumbling with two remarkable wins, which have cost us a fair bit of money.

“The punters are now turning their attentions to backing her for the title and we’re starting to rack up a fairly heavy liability on her in the outright.”
